Tips and tricks around BMW bikes

Transmission

In order to achieve favorable consumption values, production motorcycles often have very long gear ratios. This is often suitable for top speeds on the highway, but for most people this is not the main purpose of their motorcycle. Here are our recommendations:

For the racetrack: in 6th gear on the longest straight, at least the engine speed of maximum power should be reached (see operating instructions).

For winding mountain roads: in most cases, a reduction of 5–10% is recommended as a compromise for improved elasticity at still moderate engine speeds during cross-country driving in 6th gear.

Main fuse | all newer BMW models

The main fuse may come loose due to vibration. We recommend securing it with cable ties or adhesive tape.

Screen protector | all BMW models with TFT

We recommend plastic variants as screen protectors. Plastic absorbs energy when broken, metal when deformed. That is why helmets are no longer made of metal.

Radiator protectors | all BMW models

To prevent the engine from overheating and, above all, to reduce the risk of engine damage caused by overheated oil, we recommend avoiding protective covers / meshes with thick wires and/or those that having a gap between mesh and rediator. Such unsuitable protective covers often feature printed markings - as printings are more visible on thick wire, but significantly reduce the cooling air flow.

Suspension adjustment | all BMW models (especially S1000/M1000)

The BMW M1000/S1000 models are set to be too stiff from factory for most riders – mainly at the rear shock absorber. We recommend:

  • Refer to the vehicle's operating manual – it is very well done by BMW

  • The spring preload on the shock absorber is usually too high → reduce it

  • The damping on the rear shock – especially the rebound damping – is usually too stiff → open it

  • DDC (models from 2023+): Use the assist menu and test the damping in "DYNAMIC" riding mode

  • Swingarm pivot adjustment (RR from 2019 onwards): Test in the "low" position (standard position is "up") - see operating instructions

Cable knock sensor | S1000 / M1000 models

The insulation of the cables can melt due to the heat input from the exhaust system, causing a short circuit. We recommend:

  • Knock control active (e.g., mapping in S variant): Wrap the cable with aluminum tape to reduce the transfer of radiant heat.

  • Knock control deactivated (e.g., mapping in R/C variant): Disconnect the plug connection to the sensor and tie the cable back to the wiring harness

Oil cooler lines

Many BMW models are equipped with black oil cooler lines ex works. On the M1000 / S1000 models in particular, one of the lines runs very close to the exhaust system, which absorbs waste heat. To reduce the risk of engine damage due to overheated oil, we recommend wrapping black oil lines (especially those close to the exhaust system) with aluminum tape.

Seal open plug connections

There is a blanking cap for almost every connector. However, since there are so many different connectors, you would need countless blanking cap variants. We therefore recommend covering the open plug with heat-shrink tubing and crimping the still-warm tubing with pliers. Then attach the plug with the heat-shrink tubing side facing down to avoid water can be collect behind the heat-shrink tubing. In our experience, this ensures at least adequate splash water protection.
