Shiftcam position | Attention with Race Mapping PRO C

Standard electronics vs. M RCK:

On engines with Shiftcam system (not available on S1000R and S1000XR), the standard electronics control the "large" intake camshaft profile at idle. This means that the engine is stopped on the "large" cam.

With M RCK electronics, the engine is operated differently at idle on the "small" cam, which means that engines operated with these electronics are positioned differently.

Effect in practice:

If motorcycles are converted in terms of electronics or engine, it can happen that the intake camshaft is positioned incorrectly when starting. This error is recognized by the electronics, saved and immediately corrected by adjusting the camshaft, provided the Shiftcam system is active and working correctly.

Attention with Race Mapping PRO C:

With our Race Mapping PRO in variant C, the Shiftcam system is deactivated, as this system offers no advantages for pure racetrack use and therefore unnecessarily increases the risk of failure. This deactivation means that any incorrect positioning after engine replacement is not recognized and leads to reduced performance. We therefore recommend checking the positioning of the two intake camshaft parts before each engine installation (target: left in riding direction). To do this, simply remove the Shiftcam servomotor (can be replaced by a cover from R / XR models) and change the position using a padded screwdriver (video 1). As only one of the two camshaft sections can be moved at a time, the engine must be turned through approx. 360° after changing the position of one section (video 2) before the second section can be moved.

BMW repair instructions + tip for BMW service partners / professional revisors and engine mechanics:

The official repair instructions for BMW service partners stipulate that the engine should be set to "small" cam after the timing has been set to "large" cam.

Tip: Save the work step for changing to the "small" cam and leave the engines in the "large" cam position.

Removing the shiftcam system

It is possible to remove the shiftcam actuators with Race Mapping PRO C, but this is not absolutely necessary. Suitable covers can be taken from the R / XR engines. BMW part number: 11148358846

The camshafts remain in position due to the spring lock. Only after a violent impact on the right-hand side of the vehicle the position should be checked for safety reasons (see above).

Engine oil

Manufacturer's warranty:

To avoid unnecessary risks with regard to warranty coverage in the event of engine damage due to lubrication faults, we recommend using only the oil recommended by BMW during the warranty period.

High-temperature oil for racetrack use:

For racetrack use, we recommend the use of a multigrade engine oil with higher viscosity at high temperatures (SEA xxW-50, xxW-60)

Filling and initial start:

We recommend filling the new oil filter with oil before installation in order to minimize the time it takes to build up the oil pressure after the initial start. In addition, we recommend - especially if the engine has been standing dry for some time - turning the starter for 2 minutes to ensure a small amount of oil distribution in dry-running channels at low speed. To prevent the engine from starting, we recommend disconnecting the fuel hose from the fuel tank using the quick-release coupling fitted as standard.
Oil level: for maximum performance, we recommend an oil level in the lower third of the sight glass (engine at operating temperature, wait at least 5 minutes after switching off the engine).

Run-in

Regardless of whether it is a new engine or after an revision - it should be run in. Bearing shells run in relatively quickly, whereas new pistons and piston rings need a little more time. We recommend at least 2.5 engine running hours at varying engine speeds (increase maximum speed slowly and gradually).
